Terms of Service
Effective June 8, 2026
These Terms of Service ("Terms") are a binding agreement between you and Halfsies ("Halfsies", "we", "us", "our") for your use of the Halfsies application and services (the "Service") at halfsies.fun. By creating an account or using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.
The Service is operated by Halfsies. You can reach us any time at help@halfsies.fun.
1. Eligibility & your account
You must be at least 13 years old (or the minimum age of digital consent where you live) to use the Service. You’re responsible for the information you provide, for keeping your login credentials secure, and for all activity that happens under your account. Tell us promptly at help@halfsies.fun if you believe your account has been compromised.
2. What Halfsies does
Halfsies is a tool for recording shared expenses, splitting them between people, and tracking who owes whom. Halfsies does not move, hold, or transfer money between users. Balances shown in the app are a record-keeping convenience; settling up actually happens between you and the people you share expenses with, outside the Service. We are not a bank, payment processor, escrow service, or financial advisor.
3. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- break the law, or use the Service to facilitate anything illegal;
- infringe anyone’s intellectual-property or privacy rights;
- upload content that is unlawful, harmful, or that you don’t have the right to share;
- attempt to access other users’ data, probe or breach security, or disrupt the Service;
- scrape, resell, or reverse-engineer the Service except as the law allows; or
- upload malware or otherwise interfere with how the Service runs for others.
We may suspend or remove content or accounts that violate these Terms.
4. Your content & data
You keep ownership of the content you put into Halfsies — your group names, expenses, notes, and uploaded receipt images (“Your Content”). You grant us a limited licence to store and process Your Content solely to operate and provide the Service to you and the people you share groups with (for example, sending a receipt image to our OCR provider to extract line items). How we handle personal data is described in our Privacy Policy.
5. Payments & supporter contributions
The Service is free to use. You may optionally make a one-time or recurring “Support Halfsies” contribution. Those payments are processed by Paddle.com Market Limited ("Paddle"), which acts as the merchant of record / authorized reseller for the transaction. This means Paddle — not us — handles the payment, billing, and applicable sales tax/VAT, and your purchase is also subject to Paddle’s buyer terms. Recurring contributions renew until cancelled; you can manage or cancel anytime from Settings or via Paddle. Refunds are governed by our Refund Policy. Supporter contributions are voluntary and do not unlock features or change the Service you receive.
6. Third-party services
We rely on third parties to run Halfsies (hosting, email delivery, payment processing, and AI receipt reading). Your use of the Service may be subject to those providers’ terms, and we’re not responsible for their acts or omissions. The providers we use are listed in our Privacy Policy.
7. The Service is provided “as is”
The Service is provided on an “as is” and “as available” basis, without warranties of any kind, whether express or implied, including fitness for a particular purpose, merchantability, and non-infringement. We don’t warrant that the Service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or that balances and calculations will be free of mistakes. You are responsible for verifying any amount before you settle up.
8. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, Halfsies will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss of money, data, or goodwill, arising from your use of (or inability to use) the Service — including any dispute between you and the people you split expenses with. To the extent we are found liable, our total liability is limited to the greater of the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim, or USD $50.
9. Termination
You may stop using the Service and delete your account at any time. We may suspend or terminate your access if you breach these Terms or if we need to for legal, security, or operational reasons. Sections that by their nature should survive termination (e.g. content licence limits, disclaimers, limitation of liability, and governing law) will survive.
10. Changes to the Service and these Terms
We may update the Service and these Terms from time to time. If we make a material change, we’ll update the “Effective” date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the app or by email. Continuing to use the Service after a change takes effect means you accept the updated Terms.
11. Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of British Columbia, Canada, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules, and you agree to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts located there, except where applicable consumer-protection law gives you the right to bring a claim elsewhere.
